RISING FROM THE ASHES. The Cathedral of St. James, originally designed by Architect Edward Burling, was completed in 1871. It was virtually destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire. Only the Bell Tower survived, which was incorporated into the new construction of 1875 by Architects Clarke and Faulkner. Click on Bookmarks (left) or scroll down to explore the collection of photography describing this Victorian Landmark Structure. Note the painted glass, and the stencil ornament designed by E.J. Neville Stent. Augusta Freeman's Paul Popp Memorial Font is at the entrance of the Sanctuary.
