++ George Washington Maher was born on December 25, 1864 in Mill Creek, West Virginia.  His family moved to New Albany, Indiana  and then on to Chicago.  He was an apprentice in the firm of Bauer and Hill before joining Joseph L. Silsbee in 1887..  In 1888 he formed a partnership with Charles Corwin.  In 1893 he married Elizabeth Brooks (daughter of Alden Brooks) and began private practice in Kenilworth. His Prairie School and Arts and Crafts style projects were marked by Motif Rhythm Theory.  An indigenous plant or flower was chosen as each project's motif.  He practiced alone until 1914 when his son, Philip, joined the firm. He completed more than 270 projects ranging from private residences to large public projects. He died on September 12, 1926 in Douglas, Michigan.  In addition to his architectural commissions, Maher's enduring interests included community planning and historic preservation.
