THE ONE NORTH LASALLE BUILDING WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN 1929. LINK TO THE BOOK HERE.

For half a century Architects Karl Martin Vitzthum and John Burns’ One North LaSalle Building was the tallest building in the City (if competitor’s towers and steeples are excluded).  Without dispute, it is a full 48 stories tall reaching a spectacular height of 530’.   Completed in 1930, it contains nearly half a million rentable square feet of office space.  This skyscraper’s vertical lines emphasize its streamlined Art Deco style. The lowered corners respond to the 1923 Chicago Zoning Ordinance.  The highly ornamented  stone  base features bas reliefs by Carl Beil, including depictions of Marquette , LaSalle, Joliet and an American Indian Chief.  Atlas and Justice flank the front door.  The interior still holds its original brass including grilles, light fixtures, and elevator panels.  Other Chicago Loop buildings by Vitzthum and Burns include the Steuben Club, the Old Republic Building and St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
