++Carl Beil was born on December 9, 1857 in Germany to parents Johann and Therese. He studied art in Munich, and then emigrated to the United States where he served as Superintendent of Sculpture at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition and later at Fairs in Buffalo and St. Louis.
Leon Hermant was born in 1866 and educated in Paris. In 1904 he came to the US to work on the French Pavilion at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, where he met Carl Beil.
In 1905 Beil and Hermant formed their partnership which would last until Biel's death in 1927. Their studio was located at 21 East Person Street in Chicago.
