GUARDIANS OF TRAFFIC
LORRAINE CARNEGIE / HOPE MEMORIAL BRIDGE

Henry Hering's Guardians of Traffic, eight monumental figures attached to four pylons at either end of the bridge span were designed to "typify the progress in transportation. Each figure holds a different vehicle. And each has a winged helmet (typical of the Roman God Mercury) and wings that wrap the supporting pylons. The Lorain Carnegie Bridge was designed by Engineer Wilbur Watson and Associates with Frank Walker as Consulting Architect.Walker designed the 43 foot tall "Guardians" which were produced by Henry Hering with local stone cutters. The Bridge opened in 1932
